How to Vet a Website Before You Buy a Backlink

Knowing how to vet a website for backlinks is the difference between an asset and a liability. This checklist covers traffic, relevance, link profile and red flags.

Every buyer eventually learns the hard lesson: a strong DR score tells you almost nothing about whether a site is worth a placement. Knowing how to vet a website for backlinks is the skill that separates a good purchase from a refund request. The good news is that a handful of checks catch most bad sites in under ten minutes.

Start with traffic that could actually exist

Traffic quality is the first filter, and it is not the same as traffic volume. A site can show impressive monthly visits and still be useless if that traffic is bought, bot-driven, or irrelevant to your market. Look at the country split: if you are targeting the US market, a site whose traffic is 90 percent from a country you do not sell in is a poor fit regardless of its DR.

Then sanity-check the numbers. A lively site with real editorial output usually has a footed traffic profile - a handful of pages doing the heavy lifting and a long tail of smaller ones. A flat, suspiciously uniform traffic chart is a warning sign.

Confirm relevance before anything else

A link's value is largely contextual. If the site covers your topic, the link carries meaning; if it covers something unrelated, it is a decorative link with a number attached. Read the homepage and two or three recent articles. Do they speak to the same audience you sell to? Would a placement there look natural to a reader?

Relevance is also about the specific page your link lands on. A niche edit inside a well-matched article is worth more than the same site's homepage footer. Always look at where the link will actually sit.

This is where most weak sites reveal themselves. Open the site's backlinks and ask three questions.

  • Is the profile diverse? Links from many different, real domains are a good sign. A profile dominated by the same few networks is not.
  • Is there anything off-topic or spammy? A fashion blog with links from casinos and pharma is a site that sells to anyone. Your link will join that list.
  • Is it growing for the right reasons? Steady, editorial growth beats a spike followed by silence.

Spam score and authority metrics are useful as a quick triage, but they are inputs, not verdicts. A high metric on a site with an ugly link neighbourhood is a trap.

Spot the red flags

A few signals disqualify a site quickly. Pages of thin, spun content. The same author byline on hundreds of unrelated articles. A "write for us" page that openly sells links with no editorial filter. Contact pages that lead to a marketplace rather than a person. Obvious PBN tells, like a footer stuffed with unrelated sister sites. If two or more of these are present, walk away - there are plenty of clean sites.

A five-minute checklist

  • Country and traffic split matches your target market.
  • Recent articles are relevant and genuinely written for people.
  • Backlink profile is diverse and free of obvious spam.
  • Sampled pages are indexed in Google.
  • The exact page and link placement look natural.
  • No PBN or link-selling red flags.

Run that list and you will avoid the vast majority of bad buys. It is the same process we apply to every site before it reaches the marketplace, so the filtering is largely done for you - but it is worth knowing how to do it yourself, because the fastest way to lose trust in link building is to buy one bad placement you did not see coming. If you are new to this, our blog and Write for Us pages cover the rest of the workflow.
